Types of chain and material used:

 Material About the Material
Gold & Silver Plated Steel The plated steel used is waterproof, but may naturally fade over a long period of time. I would advise removing items in water (such as swimming or in the sea) to avoid the jewellery interacting with chlorine, salts or other substances.
Stainless Steel or Steel Long-lasting and tarnish-free, suitable for extended use. Will not peel, flake or fade overtime.
Sterling Silver Has a shiner finish than stainless steel. Sterling silver has an alloy of silver containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper.
May slowly tarnish overtime (anywhere from a few months to a few years), depending on level of use, due to body oils.
14K Gold Filled Long-lasting and tarnish-free. Will not peel, flake or fade overtime. This material is made up of a solid layer of 14K gold, which is permanently bonded to a base metal. The next best thing to solid gold.
9ct or 18ct Solid Gold Made of pure gold and will not tarnish. 9ct gold contains 37.5% pure gold and 62.5& other metals. 18ct gold contains 75% pure gold and 25% other metals.
